For the Ancient Egyptians they associated the stone with the early morning dawn and the waters of Nun. It was also considered to be the hair of the gods, which is why you will see it in the inlays of pharaohs ornate sarcophagi. Lapis Lazuli doesn't occur naturally in Egypt which means they thought it was so beautiful/important/valuable that they were willing to import every single piece of it that they used.
