Meet Gideon!
Have you ever been in the library and seen a flash of brilliant blue or heard the rustling of leathery wings? It was probably just Gideon searching for his next book to devour. Metaphorically of course! Every good dragon has a hoard and Gideon hoards books. His greatest regret in life is that one time that he sneezed while reading an ancient tome and burnt down the library of Alexandria.
Gideon was made by combining a few different dragon patterns, his body, head, wings and limbs are all from the absolutely amazing free pattern Vincent the Dragon by Hooked by Kati but his details, the fins around his head and on his back, both came from another designer Megan Lapp's Eastern Dragon Ornamentation add ons.
This pattern by Hooked by Kati is one of my favorites, I think the way she managed to make the crochet itself hold its shape is just brilliant, it does require understanding on short rows. The only wire in the entire piece is in the wings. Which admittedly are a little bit small, but I like that they aren't too heavy to hold their shape long term which is a problem that I have had with other dragon wings in the past.
I did somewhat modify the pieces from the Megan Lapp pattern to make them fit Gideon more appropriately. And I shortened all of the limbs from the Vincent pattern as well as removed one of the front toes, I just like the look a lot better with three than four. Additionally instead of doing rows of ecru for claws I used french knots, this is also just personal preference.
I usually end up keeping these guys when I make them but when I sell them I sell them for 80. This does not pay for my time but honestly if I didn't occasionally let one go my entire house would be crawling with dragons!
