I am the president of my universities bookbinding guild. (It sounds way fancier than it is, there are mainly 5 of us in a basement making books together.) Most of the time what we make are fairly simple softcover journals, and my favorite size is 5.5" x 3.5" or some similar ratio. They are extremely simple to make, cut the interior papers down to approximately the size of the finished book if opened flat. Cut one piece of decorative paper to the same size to act as the cover. Place the plain papers inside the cover page and fold it in half. Use an awl or a thick needle to punch holes all the way through along the spine and stitch it together using a heavy weight yarn. They make the perfect gifts!
